Discarded Docents by BJ Neblett

"Education is what happens as you learn to live life."

Hoods yawn proud metal cenotaphs
Silent sentinels of the past
Mute guardians to yesterday

Yesterday’s discarded heroes
Knights errant bone on concrete ways

Soldiers borne in strength and number
Headlights dim in rusted slumber
Sleep in majestic memory

Oh sleeping Paladins of yore
That shed sweet tears of fantasy

Bitter sweet tears coalesce and run
Lacquered dreams in a jealous sun
Melt in naked veracity

Naked plumes of heliotrope
Witness to the blind reverie

A boy I wandered blind and free
Adrift in nameless mystery
Seeking a vainglorious truth

They spoke of truth of life and death
Metallic mentors of my youth
